Team History
More Than 50 Years of Swimming, Community and Competition
For more than four decades, the Breakers Swim Team has been a proud part of the Port Elgin and Saugeen Shores community.
The story of the Breakers is closely connected to Centennial Pool at Saugeen District Secondary School. For generations of local swimmers, Centennial Pool was where they learned to swim, discovered competitive swimming, trained alongside teammates and built friendships that lasted well beyond their time in the pool.
It was also where the Breakers began.
Over the years, Breakers swimmers have competed throughout Ontario and beyond, building a strong tradition of dedication, sportsmanship and achievement. The club has produced swimmers who have competed at provincial and national levels, brought medals home to Saugeen Shores and established a long list of club records. The record board at Centennial Pool became a visible reminder of more than 50 years of Breakers accomplishments and the many swimmers who helped build the club's legacy.
Building a Competitive Swimming Community
The Breakers have always been more than a swim team. The club has grown through the commitment of swimmers, coaches, parents, officials and volunteers who have worked together to create opportunities for athletes in the community.
For many years, Breakers hosted competitive swim meets at Centennial Pool, welcoming clubs from across the region. The Southport Optimist Swim Meet became an important tradition, with the 29th annual event taking place in Port Elgin in 2013. Breakers swimmers captured the overall team title that year, while several swimmers earned high-point honours and club records were broken.
The club continued hosting sanctioned competitions at Centennial Pool for many years. The 32nd Annual Southport Optimist Invitational was held in November 2016, demonstrating the longstanding role the Breakers have played in bringing competitive swimming to Port Elgin.
These meets became an important part of the Breakers experience—not only giving local swimmers the opportunity to race at home, but also bringing visiting athletes, coaches and families into the community.
A Club That Continued to Grow
The Breakers continued to develop as a competitive swim club while remaining rooted in the local community.
In 2018, the club launched a new website and refreshed its visual identity as part of an effort to modernize its presence and better showcase the opportunities available to local swimmers.
By 2019, Breakers swimmers were continuing to compete successfully at regional competitions. At the McDonald's Team Challenge hosted by the Owen Sound Aquatic Club, 17 Breakers swimmers produced numerous personal-best performances, with the team finishing fifth overall.
Throughout its history, the club has continued to provide swimmers with opportunities to progress—from learning the fundamentals of competitive swimming through to higher levels of training and competition.
